"Laurier helped me build confidence. Now I want to help others!"
"I decided to take one course, and see how it went. If it went well, I would continue from there,” says Donna Taylor (BA ’88). “It went well!”
And so began nine years of part-time study at Laurier for this mature student with a passion for geography.
Now retired and living with her husband Dan outside of Clinton, Ontario, Donna recalls her decision to start university later in life.
“I had two college diplomas and I said to myself, if I can do that, then maybe I can do this!” She’s been a dedicated alumna ever since.
“I was pretty insecure about schooling prior to joining Laurier,” she admits, “But in my program, I had such amazing, encouraging professors.”
Donna’s confidence grew, as did her emotional connection to Laurier. After graduation, she immediately began to look for ways to give back.
Donna is a longtime annual donor, supporting the highest priority needs of the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies. A few years ago, Donna and Dan decided they wanted to support the Department through a gift in their will and let the university know. Upon learning of the exemption of capital gains on publicly traded securities when donated to charity, they chose this creative way to leave their legacy at Laurier.
“I hope that my gift can support other mature students like me to start or continue with their studies,” says Donna, “And I encourage other donors to consider a planned gift of shares – it’s a unique and practical way to give.”
