Awards give students peace of mind

Sisters Kenzie and Belle are both Bachelor of Arts students at Laurier. Kenzie is in her second year, majoring in Film Studies with an English minor; Belle is in her third year, majoring in Sociology with a minor in Criminology. They both live at home in Kitchener with their mother. And they both received a Herman, Winnifred and Kathryn Lippert Memorial Bursary, established through a legacy bequest.

While living at home does help Kenzie and Belle save money on rent and groceries, they are still solely responsible for paying tuition as their mother can’t afford to help; the Herman, Winnifred and Kathryn Lippert Memorial Bursary has made it possible for them both to obtain a postsecondary education.

“I was so excited to receive this bursary,” says Kenzie. “I’m paying tuition all by myself, and that’s really intimidating. This bursary helped me buy my books this term and that helps me not worry so much.”

“This bursary will allow me to spend less time at my part-time job and more time studying to reach my academic goals,” says Belle. “It will help me pay for tuition and books.”

Kenzie believes that awards give students peace of mind.

“That’s something hard to find these days,” she says.

They also appreciate how the gift helps their mother. “Our mom is a single mom and has done everything in her ability to provide us with as much as she can, and we could not be more grateful to her. This bursary will also allow us to help our mom out more,” says Belle.

The sisters look to a bright future: Kenzie plans to attend the Toronto Film School and eventually move to Vancouver to work in the film industry, while Belle is deciding between earning a master’s degree at Laurier, going to law school or going to college to earn a paralegal degree. They are both grateful to the donors who made this future possible.
