Making Space for Music logo

Opportunities and Outcomes

The internationally recognized Faculty of Music offers an unparalleled learning environment, designed to support personal excellence, artistic confidence and a lively spirit of collaboration.Yet our aging campus facilities do not reflect this. Students and instructors describe the practice rooms as falling short of their needs. We lack the means to easily, inclusively and beautifully share our music with each other and with the world around us. We need to create a space that will open us up to each other and to the world.

Our architectural renovation will draw you into a sunlit world where music is happening at all times, in all sorts of ways, by all sorts of people; where students have bright, inspiring practice spaces in which they can see and be seen within community; where worldclass performances in high-quality acoustic environments thrill and inspire people from all walks life; where deep relationships are forming between people who are committed to using music to bring health, wellness and joy to their communities.

Enhancement Goals

Create an Exceptional Entranceway: This dramatic new gateway to the Waterloo campus will complement the striking architecture of Lazaridis Hall and continue Laurier’s transformation of University Avenue.

Fill the Lobby with Light and Space: Guests will be welcomed into an airy, intimate lobby that includes an amphitheatre-like space. Full of natural light and equipped with relaxed seating, sound equipment and a grand piano, this contemporary, glassed-in space will become the site for impromptu concerts by students and faculty, as well as for small musical events in Waterloo.

Offer Exciting New Practice Rooms: Our goal is to create a wing of new practice rooms, each will be designed with floor-to-ceiling windows providing a view onto University Avenue and/or the lobby.
